Sankrail Anil Biswas Smriti Mahavidyalaya, located in Kultikri, Jhargram, West Bengal, was established in 2007 with a noble vision to bring higher education to the underprivileged communities of the Jungle Mahal region. The college was founded under the aegis of the Sankrail Block Education and Rural Development Society, a collective of local education enthusiasts and social workers dedicated to addressing the educational disparities in Sankrail and its neighboring blocks. Named in honor of Anil Biswas, a revered social worker and education advocate, the institution embodies his legacy of empowering marginalized communities through knowledge and opportunity.
In its nascent stage, the college operated from the premises of Kultikri S.C. High School, relying on modest resources but driven by an unwavering commitment to its mission. The early years were marked by challenges, including limited infrastructure and financial constraints, yet the determination of the founding members and community support laid a strong foundation. By 2010, the college achieved a significant milestone with the completion of its own campus in Kultikri, a sprawling, eco-friendly space designed to foster academic and personal growth.
Affiliated with Vidyasagar University, the college initially offered undergraduate programs in Arts, focusing on subjects like Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Santali, and Political Science. Over time, it expanded its academic portfolio to include Science streams, introducing disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Geography under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and later the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) framework. This growth reflected the institution’s adaptability to evolving educational standards and its commitment to providing diverse opportunities for first-generation learners, particularly from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
A pivotal moment in the college’s journey came in 2019 when it earned accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), a testament to its dedication to quality education and institutional excellence. The accreditation process spurred further improvements in infrastructure, including the addition of ICT-enabled classrooms, a well-equipped library named after Pandit Raghunath Murmu, an indoor stadium, and a gymnasium, enhancing the learning environment.
The college’s history is also shaped by its deep-rooted connection to the local community. Through initiatives like the National Service Scheme (NSS) and extension activities, it has fostered social awareness and community development, aligning with its motto of inclusive education. The institution has consistently prioritized the needs of economically disadvantaged students, offering scholarships, remedial coaching, and career counseling to ensure equitable access to education.
Today, Sankrail Anil Biswas Smriti Mahavidyalaya stands as a beacon of hope and progress in a remote area of Jhargram, serving over thousands of students annually. Its journey from a humble beginning to a NAAC-accredited institution reflects the collective efforts of its founders, faculty, staff, and students. As it continues to grow, the college remains committed to its founding principles: to ignite minds, innovate for the future, and include all in the pursuit of knowledge.
